About the Museum
The Izumi City Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art opened in 1982.
The museum has a collection of approximately 13,000 pieces, mainly Toyo Oriental art, including Japanese and Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and crafts, and holds four to five special exhibitions a year that make use of the collection, as well as one original special exhibition a year.
In addition to exhibitions, the museum also holds tea ceremonies, concerts, and citizen art exhibitions, providing opportunities for creative expressions and contributing to local cultural development.
"Kuboso" (Kuboso Co., Ltd.), the museum's namesake, was a major textile company in Senshu for about 100-years since the Meiji Era. The first president, Mr. Sotaru Kubo (1863-1928), founded the company in 1886. Upon its closure in 1977, the third-generation president donated art, buildings, land, and funds to Izumi City as a gesture of gratitude, as well as to support the local culture.
In October 1982, the museum was established on the site of the former Kubo Family residence. In 1997, the fifth-generation president, Mr. Tsunehiko Kubo, donated a new wing.
Since then, additional facilities such as a music hall, citizen gallery, creative studio, and research building have been added, expanding the museum to its current size of approximately 5,000坪 (Tsubo - about 16,500 sqm.)
